Laser marking of metals
What is laser metal marking?
Laser marking is used when the information on a product must remain legible throughout its entire service life. Serial numbers, codes, technical designations, or logos are applied without mechanical intervention in the part, preserving its geometry and surface.
The beam works locally, forming a contrast in the metal structure or removing a thin layer of material. The resulting marking is not erased by friction, is not afraid of moisture, and can withstand temperature loads. That is why the technology is widely used in manufacturing and industry.
What elements can be applied?
The laser can print barcodes, Data Matrix and QR codes, serial and batch numbers, technical parameters, traceability markings, logos and graphic elements. The image is clear even in small areas.
In mass production, it is important that each unit has the same quality of marking. Laser technology ensures repeatability without sacrificing contrast or accuracy.
The main methods of labeling
Depending on the material and the task, different approaches are used.
The black marking is formed by controlled oxidation of the surface. The method is suitable for stainless steel and light metals, providing a dark, highly legible contrast without removing a layer of material.
White marking involves partial removal of the top layer of metal. This variant gives a light shade and is used where maximum visual expressiveness is required.
In cases where the metal reacts poorly to the laser, special compounds are used to increase the contrast. After processing, the marking remains durable and does not require additional protection.
Where laser marking is used
The technology is used in the automotive, engineering, aviation, and electronics industries. It allows you to organize a traceability system where each part has a unique identifier.
In addition to technical tasks, marking is used for product branding and for applying QR codes that provide access to service or technical information. Decorative engraving is also possible for premium products.
Project implementation at Criox
At Criox, laser marking is performed with parameters tailored to the specific metal and contrast requirements. We take into account the operating conditions of the product and the type of marking even before the process is started.
If you need to organize labeling for a series or apply technical information to finished parts, please send us a specification or an example. After analyzing it, we will prepare a technical solution with a time and cost estimate.
