What is laser cutting of non-metals?

Laser cutting of non-metals is gaining popularity along with the development of modern cutting technologies that use a beam of concentrated laser radiation as a working tool. This is a universal technology that is used to process many sheet materials.

These materials include plastic and plexiglass, paper and cardboard, wood and plywood, MDF and other pressed fiberboards. Leather, foam, and sheet rubber can also be cut. The introduction of laser cutting has made it possible to perform work that was not possible with traditional contact tools at a low cost.

In particular, this method is used to produce decorative panels with complex internal cutouts and parts made of insulating materials (for example, paronite gaskets) used in mechanical engineering. Laser cutting is also widely used to create structures with high requirements for accuracy and geometry.

Advantages of the technology

Laser cutting is performed on automated equipment with computer control. Digital drawings are uploaded to the machine controller, after which processing is carried out automatically without operator intervention. This eliminates the influence of the human factor and significantly increases the speed and accuracy of work.

The main advantages of laser cutting:

  • A perfectly clean and even cutting line;
  • the ability to process fragile or easily deformed materials;
  • minimal cutting width combined with high positioning accuracy, which allows you to create contours of complex shapes;
  • high quality processing of both external contours and shaped holes and cutouts;
  • precise processing of corners without chipping or damaging the material structure.

Laser cutting is particularly effective for producing complex shaped parts in small volumes when it is not economically feasible to create expensive tooling or dies.
